Funder Spotlight: TCB
The Community Builders is a leading nonprofit real estate developer that owns or manages more than 11,000 quality apartments. TCB serves as a neighborhood catalyst by developing housing for families and seniors and investing in local businesses and public entities that strengthen neighborhoods. Together with its partners, TCB brings diverse experience and comprehensive expertise to every community it serves.
TCB’s footprint in Avondale includes the redevelopment of the Avondale Town Center, for which it is the developer and property manager, as well as a variety of affordable housing.
TCB is also an important partner to the Avondale Development Corporation. It helps fund ADC’s community engagement efforts – a central ADC function that includes Avondale Financial Literacy workshops as well as our robust communications platform, in an effort to keep residents informed about important issues in the neighborhood.
Economic Mobility Fund & Financial Literacy Workshop
TCB also supports the Avondale Economic Mobility Fund, a grant program designed to help at-risk Avondale families avoid displacement due to new development and investment in the neighborhood. The first two rounds of the EMF featured 40 grants of $1,000 each to residents. The program was modified to be responsive to the immediate needs of residents as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, including grants of up to $1,000 to Avondale residents to ensure the availability of shelter, help them maintain social distancing, and access other resources.
Avondale Day, a day-long series of events centered on health and community building, also benefits from TCB’s support. Events include the Avondale Festival & Health Fair, Black Men’s Health Forum and the 5K Avondale Feet in the Street walk and run. Avondale Day is a lifeline to at-risk African American families, providing health screenings, counsel and important information in the context of a day-long festival for friends and family.
