Avondale Film Camp & Festival: A Celebration of Youth Voice, Neighborhood Storytelling, and Creative Collaboration
Each year, the Avondale Film Camp & Festival grows not only in size, but in purpose—and 2025 marked its most inspirational year yet. What began as a small youth storytelling initiative has evolved into one of Avondale’s signature creative programs, empowering young filmmakers to see their neighborhood not just as home, but as a place worthy of cinematic celebration.
97 Youth Participants — Our Largest Cohort Ever
This year, ADC welcomed 97 young artists, making it the largest film camp cohort to date. Students ages 10–17 immersed themselves in the fundamentals of filmmaking—from scriptwriting and camera operation, to lighting, editing, sound design, and on-set collaboration. They worked in teams, took creative risks, and developed stories rooted in their lived experiences.
The growth of the camp reflects the power of partnership. In 2025, we were proud to collaborate with an impressive lineup of regional media educators and industry professionals, including:
AZ Media
Cincinnati State
Easley Blessed Media
Shadow Village
Three 49 Media
University of Cincinnati
Xavier University
These partners offered workshops, guest lectures, equipment demonstrations, and professional coaching, ensuring participants gained hands-on, industry-level experience. Many students used professional cameras for the first time; others learned to edit on non-linear software; all of them walked away with new technical skills, confidence, and creative direction.
A Festival That Showcased the Very Best of Avondale’s Talent
The Avondale Film Festival brought together families, neighbors, filmmakers, and community leaders for a night of celebration. The showcase featured films created during camp, as well as short films spotlighting Avondale’s culture, history, and rising voices.
This year’s festival included multiple award categories and a lineup of extraordinary young filmmakers whose work captivated the audience.
2025 Festival Winners
Best Short Film: The Fourth — Johnny Kirk
Best Direction: In the Middle — Megan Benzing
Best Social Impact Film: Hands Behind Your Back — Danny Hayden
Avondale Creative Excellence Award: ROMAC — Kamaryn Madry
Each winner demonstrated a unique approach to storytelling—from emotionally rich narratives to bold explorations of identity, community, and justice. Their films reflected a depth of creativity and maturity far beyond their years.
Spotlight: Avondale Finalists & Community Stories
In addition to the winners, the judges named two Avondale finalists, young filmmakers whose work stood out for originality, voice, and heart. These films uplifted local experiences and gave audiences powerful perspectives rooted in the lived realities of Avondale youth.
The festival also featured special Avondale spotlights, including “Katt Williams: Return to Avondale” by AZ Media, a hometown story honoring one of the most influential entertainers to come out of the neighborhood. The short was met with cheers, laughter, and heartfelt recognition—highlighting Avondale’s deep well of talent and cultural pride.
A Festival That Belongs to the Community
Beyond the films, the atmosphere itself was electric. Families arrived dressed for the occasion, youth filmmakers took photos on the red carpet, and residents filled the room with applause, encouragement, and joy. For many of our students, this was their first time screening their work publicly—and certainly not their last.
The Avondale Film Camp & Festival continues to be more than a program. It is a pipeline for creative careers, a vehicle for youth empowerment, and a community celebration of the stories that make Avondale what it is—resilient, expressive, and full of brilliance.
