Quality of Life Update

The Quality of Life plan is the official master plan for Avondale, touching all aspects of the neighborhood’s development – from street layout and safety to schools, housing, retail and social services. Although facilitated by the Avondale Development Corporation, QoL is truly the residents’ plan.

Even though QOL implementation was challenged last year by the pandemic, the team was able to make important strides in the areas of safety and housing and social determinants of health.

In the area of safety, ADC – working with various City of Cincinnati departments, Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center and Legal Aid – secured the return of PIVOT (Police Based Investigations of Violent Offender Territories) to Avondale with a goal of more community involvement and finding lasting solutions to address the underlying causes of crime. ADC also hosted a meeting between Avondale residents, the PIVOT team and CPD Chief Eliot Issac which resulted in a higher concentration of police presence and improvement in police response to the areas where residents expressed concern. 

In the area of housing and social determinants of health, ADC collaborated with the City, Legal Aid and Cincinnati Children’s to find resolutions for problematic properties in Avondale. Further collaboration with the City and the Port of Greater Cincinnati to identify and develop safe, sanitary and decent low income housing for families most at risk of displacement due to poor living conditions. 

ADC’s Ambassador Program partnered with Joining Forces for Children, Mayerson Center and Design Impact to develop messaging for trauma and adverse childhood experiences (ACEs). Thanks to a great from Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC), ADC trained and provided a stipend for five residents to collaborate with District 4‘s Mental Health Response team and first responders to connect with Avondale families impacted by traumatic events.
